Total Body Photography
What is Total Body Photography?
Total body photography, as the name suggests, involves taking images of all of the skin on your body (excluding breasts and genital areas). These images are taken at very high resolution with a digital SLR camera and the multiple images (30 in total) area fed into our specialised skin cancer software to be analysed by leading Artificial Intelligence (DermEngine Deep Neural Network). DermEngine’s AI has been trained to detect new and changing moles on the skin.
Total body photography allows early detection of melanomas by monitoring change over time. The series of 30 images are usually repeated yearly, at the same time as your annual skin check, providing an extra early warning system in melanoma detection.
At the Skin Cancer Centre Coogee, your doctor will discuss total body photography with you if you are considered high risk for developing a melanoma, especially with 100 or more moles with varying shapes and sizes, or a strong family history of melanoma. If you would like Total Body Photography as part of your personal skin cancer detection plan, please mention this at your appointment. Please note, total body photography is not an alternative to skin checks. Our doctors will still need to check your moles with a dermatoscope.
